The National Gallery of Australia is one of the most exciting art galleries in Australia and is dedicated to the preservation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and Australian art in addition to Asian and international art. It was established in 1967 by the Australian Government as a public art gallery to make art more accessible to the Australian people.
The National Gallery of Australia’s collections include more than 100,000 works spread across over 2424m² of display space. There are 11 galleries dedicated to showcasing Indigenous Australian art which comprises over 7,500 pieces of artwork. It is the largest collection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art in the world.
